The Yorkshire Evening Post profiles Gary McAllister. Essential reading, especially seeing as he’s now the Red Hot Favourite for the vacant Leeds job.
Ken Bates won’t consider Assistant Manager Dave Bassett or First-team Coach John Gannon as replacements for Dennis Wise, but he does think he’ll have a replacement for Dennis Wise before the end of this week. Doesn’t hang about, does he?

Any club employing Wise deserve everything they get. He is a whining, cheating, violent guttersnipe and the epitomy of everything that is wrong with the modern game. There will be a special circle of hell devoted to him and all those who gave him an opportunity to ruin the game with his nasty little ways.

Whoa, harsh words Jim.
I’ll admit that Wise, as a player, was a bit of a pillock; as a manager, though, he’s managed to rein in his temper somewhat and was a careful, meticulous, and sensible leader at Leeds. At the very least, I don’t think he deserves that kind of abuse.
I’m not sure what you mean by calling him “the epitome of everything that is wrong with the modern game.” For me, what’s wrong with the game is the massive divide between the first and second tier Premier League teams and every other; the influx of mediocre foreign players taking opportunities from mediocre British players; and the massive influence of corporatism and branding into what used to be a matter of cultural identity.
Dennis Wise is a bit of a tit, but he’s hardly the embodiment of all that is evil. His transfer policy at Leeds has emphasised British players and graduates of the youth academy rather than cheap foreign imports, and he’s generally been a very rational voice within the team this season. I just don’t see the characteristics you do.

Wise’s raison d’etre has been - from the off - “In It For The Money”. Ask Swindon fans how they feel about him. Or Millwall. And ALL the teams he’s managed or been involved in have specialised in the dark arts: the off-the-ball rabbit punch; the professional foul; the falling-down-as-if-shot; the if-all-else-fails-kick-him-Stew. His touchline antics are legendary. It’s win-at-all-costs, never mind morality - and it’s THAT that is the curse of the modern game.
A bit of a tit? He hospitalised a cabbie, just for the hell of it. I hope and pray he never comes near my club - we came close enough with Tony Anti-Football Pulis.
