British government poised to condemn young African footballer to death
By: Matthew | December 12th, 2007
This has nothing to do with Leeds United, but I’m furious, so here goes. The British government has ordered the deportation of Alhassan Bangura, a young footballer from Sierra Leone who fled his home at the age of 15 amidst death threats and violence. He created a new life in Britain after escaping from human traffickers who brought him to London, and has married an Englishwoman. He was scouted by Watford while playing in a park, and the team consider him one of their most promising players. If he returns to Sierra Leone, he will have to leave his wife behind for a place in which he has no family and no life, where he is likely to be killed. If you’re British and you feel as strongly about this as I do, write to you MP.

I think this is a travesty, he is a quality player. But if he has to go back to Sierra Leone, he will probably end up moving to France or Germany where he can immigrate much easier. And probably develop much better then at Watford.

Hiya Corey,
The key problem is that he’s marked for death in Sierra Leone - that’s the reason he fled in the first place. Much as I agree with you that he’d be a better player if he went to the continent, he probably won’t live long enough if he has to go back.

Yeah, i know he is the heir apparent to some cult but he didnt want to join so now the cultists want to kill him. He does not have to go back to Sierra Leone, he can go somewhere else in Africa or flee to another country as a refugee. The English work permit process is an absolute shame though, typical.

I don’t like Watford. I hardly saw Bangoura in action. But sending him back at a country where “his life would be at risk” is certainly an undesirable decision. Let me state that illegal immigration is a crime, but not a crime whose punishment can be leading-to-death. Forget about the loss of precious footballing income. Forget about the illustrious career he may have. Hell, even forget totally about football. But one cannot, no on can, forget about the importance of Life. I can even accept the decision of banning him to play football in England, but not his deportation.

i think he should be sent back and not given preferential treatment over any other immigrant that doesnt have the populist vote of football fans, the same type of people who’ll probably be winging when immigrants take jobs,
nice one to the goverment for once

No idea, James. I guess criticising other countries is easier than facing up to the lunacy of your own. I don’t know if you heard, but the US government just proclaimed it’s right to kidnap British citizens accused of crimes in the US, in Britain, and ship them back to the US for trial. Lovely country.
