Andros Townsend: Thoughts from a Spurs fan

By: Thomas Hill | January 2nd, 2012

This article is a little late, and I was hoping to get these thoughts up before the game against Burnley. However you can’t have everything but I thought it would be good to hear the thoughts of a Spurs fan that knows far more about Townsend than we currently do. Yet now we’ve seen him we know for ourselves just what he can do. So without further ado here are the thoughts of Kevin McCauley a Tottenham fan and editor of Spurs blog Cartilage Free Captain.

Andros Townsend is a bit of a unique player. He’s very tall and lanky, but is great with the ball at his feet and likes to run at defenders. He’s competent as both a right and left winger, but I like him on the left. He has also played fullback in a pinch, but he’s not the best defender. His dribbling skills are top drawer for the higher Championship – lower Premiership level, but if he has a weakness, it’s that he probably runs at people a bit too much and is too late to make a pass. I don’t think it’s that he’s selfish, he just has a lot of confidence in his skills and doesn’t yet have the experience to know when an early pass is the better option. From what I’ve seen of him in Europa League, I think that he’s going to improve over the next couple of years and develop into a starting Premier League winger, though I’m not sure he’s good enough to crack a Tottenham 25-man squad while they’re competing for the top four.”

Those at the game today will have seen what Townsend can do, but I thought it would be useful to hear from someone who witnesses his performances on a more frequent basis. Lets hope he plays like he did today every week…if only.

On on on!

Don’t agree with what the spurs fan has said..he will be a top player at spurs, we’ve just signed him on a new deal to make sure we’re secure and as someone who’s seen him live on a number off occasions he’s a player that will get better and be a vital part of our squad..Leeds have got a top player

Fair enough, and yes a top player is what I saw today. Hopefully he can keep it up and continue to threaten the opposition.

I don’t agree who McCauley’s comments either, not that unusual as the site which he ‘edits’ in my opintion is one of the poorest Spurs on t’interweb.

He is far more combative than Lennon and his final ball is better IMO.

Townsend is not the finished article and any judgement as to whether he’ll ‘make it’ as a regular (Spurs) first team player is premature, particularly as to date he has made only limited appearances thus far, almost exclusively in the Europa League – Shamrock Rovers et al.

Please ignore Paulo Clarkes comments. His judgement on the strengths/weakness’ of Townsend are way off.I actually agree with the opinion expressed in the article. Lennon’s final ball has become really quite good, whereas Townsend’s is awful, he does run in to dead ends too much as well… He is not anywhere near as combative as Lennon who is far better when defending than Townsend is, althoguh he’s played at full back, he is actually awful at defending. Anyway, not really sure which Townsend Paulo has been watching, maybe Andy? He is right it’s too early to tell at the moment if he can break through or not because the raw ability is there but he has sooooo much to learn. If he has a ‘football brain’ he could become a good player – actually reminds me a lot of Obertan at Newcastle.

Let me tell you i have watched Spurs for 50 years this year of my sixty and this lad is going too be a very good player for Spurs and Leeds. When we played the all conquering Arsenal youth team he was sounded out for special praise and you can see why is goal for Leyton Orient was quality and he has scored some cracking goals. The only problem with him and its not football related he gets bored and this is Harry’s Fault the same thing happened too Bostock. This is why Bostock got a taste of the first team and the massive crowds reaction too his cameo role he said i cant wate for more Harry loaned him too Brentford a lower division than Palace where we plucked him from a step backwards to me. He is now stuck in limbo and he was a very promising player and he also showed Hull fans what he could do. So if he plays regularly he will reward Leeds with some great wing play and the odd super goal. But if Leeds struggle he will get bored and end up benched like he did at Ipswich i would have loaned him to Bolton or Blackburn or other lower premiership clubs remember he is only twenty and learning also playing like he does and Lennon Bale there biggest worry is getting injured by dirty tackles he had three players booked yesterday enjoy him because i wanted him too stay at Spurs like i wanted Walker last season look at him now.
