Gus? To Tottenham? Please say it ain’t true

By: Matthew | October 26th, 2007

The BBC - and pretty much everyone else, for that matter - is reporting that Juande Ramos, Tottenham’s replacement for Martin Jol, want Leeds’s assistant manager Gus Poyet to take on the same role at Tottenham. Leeds fans the world over are praying tonight that it ain’t true. Leeds’s manager, Dennis Wise, has asked Poyet to sit out tomorrow’s match against Milwall to avoid “distracting the players”, so it looks like he’s on the way out.

I honestly don’t know why Poyet would want to leave Leeds - Tottenham, at least on current form, are on their way down to the Championship, while Leeds are on their way up. I know which way I’d rather go.

While Spurs are on a poor run of form, I really can’t see them going down. They’ve got a squad better than most in the Premiership and just need a kick up the backside.

That said, the way things are going I wouldn’t bet against Gary Megson demanding Bolton let him speak to Spurs. And if the Tottenham board are as clueless as the Trotters’, he’ll get the job and before you know it, Spurs will be playing Colchester.

Yeah, I know - Spurs are underperforming, and I honestly think the problem was less Martin Jol and more the crazy European-style management system at Tottenham. Coming into this season I thought Tottenham looked excellent, and really only in need of a few quality signings to challenge for the top four - a good left back, a good central defender (since Ledley King is as fit as my Grandad), and one or two players in midfield, certainly in the centre to replace Jenas and, with the money, probably on the left wing too. What was Jol given? Gareth Bale (good decision) and Darren bloody Bent (idiotic decision). Would the same signings have been made if Jol were in charge of the transfer budget? I doubt it.

My suggestion that Tottenham are going down was mainly in the (folorn) hope that Gus Poyet reads this blog and might be swayed by me. I admit that this was a long shot, but I had to try.
