Leeds crash and burn. Again. Leeds 0 - 1 Hereford

By: Matthew | November 21st, 2007

Hereford vs. LeedsBeing a muppet, I just spent an hour and half writing an in-depth preview of tonight’s England - Croatia match, including assessments of all Croatia’s players, over on http://england.worldcupblog.org/, so if you want to know just who is Shakhtar Donetsk’s best Croatian player, go check it out. It’s certainly more fun than reading a match report on yet another perfect Leeds example of how to crash and burn out of a major cup tournament when up against inferior opposition. There’s no real point in writing a match report about a game in which Leeds did little of note other than injure their first-choice goalkeeper, especially when The Times and The Guardian have already done so. Let’s all just hold out for the coming weekend’s league action, since Leeds, for whatever reason, look like a Conference side whenever they have a cup match.

You’re missing the whole point of what’s going on. Why can’t you see that Leeds United doesn’t want to risk it’s best players in a cup match when they need them to get the club out of the league mess it’s in? Their first priority is to get out of league one (and the humiliation that comes with it) and back to the Championship and, given a few years, the top flight.

I can see why you’re dissapointed, we’re getting beaten by clubs that we’re not supposed to be beaten by but Dennis Wise is taking to safety option.

I see your point, but the team that turned out against Hereford wasn’t really all that inferior to Wise’s first 11. Even if I buy that Wise fielded a weakened squad - or emphasised cup games less - the nature of the goals scored against Leeds seem to imply differently. There’s something wrong beyond the emphasis placed on a competition when Leeds concede so many goals from set pieces.
