Leeds over Leyton Orient on Luciano Becchio’s goal
By: j | October 21st, 2008
Leeds defeated Leyton Orient 2-1 in a peculiar match where they controlled play but had significant finishing problems. Jermaine Beckford had a particular troubling evening, missing a penalty eleven minutes into the match as well as clanging three shots off the woodwork.
The O’s took the lead when Dean Morgan struck from the right channel nine minutes before the break only to have the match draw level with a Stephen Purches own-goal. Just before the break Luciano Becchio headed-in a Frazer Richardson cross to give Leeds the 2-1 lead and the eventual victory.
The victory sends Leeds to fourth place, three points behind Scunthorpe and Millwall locked in a tie for first. Leeds returns to action as Walsall visits Elland Road.
Leeds: Lucas, Richardson, Michalik, Telfer, Parker, Howson, Kilkenny (Robinson 84), Delph, Douglas, Beckford, Becchio (Prutton 90).
Leyton Orient: Morris, Purches, Thelwell, Mkandawire, Palmer, Melligan, Chambers, Terry, Demetriou (Thornton 69), Morgan (Jarvis 80), Boyd (Dawkins 80).

When is someone going to come right out and say it. Our two central defenders are not good enough. Surely staff is looking for a replacement. Michalik and Marques do not react fast enough nor read the play. What about moving Douglas back as center back or sweeper.

Jonathan – first off, thank you for joining in.
I agree with you on the defenders and in-fact I think the entire situation has made it easy for Aiden White and Ben Parker to move into the backline without a drop in quality.
However your comments also mentioned the pace of the defenders and that is equally a issue in the midfield. Without Fabian Delph pushing the midfield forward they slow to a miserable pace and are very predictable.
Unfortunately Leeds has been hesitate to move from a standard 4-4-2 and even their one dance with a 4-3-3 was too slow. Douglas as sweeper would solve the situation and I’d also like to see him set-back in a 4-4-2 diamond. This would move Luciano back to spearhead the attack, Fabian and Jonny in the wings and having Robert Snodgrass paired with Jermaine Beckford upfront.
Thanks again
